wedding registry do's and don'ts with williams-sonoma

sometimes a store is just a store.  they sell goods, you find yourself in want of such goods, you go there, you find, you purchase, you leave.  your needs have been fulfilled.

other times, however, a store is more than a store.  it's a diversion, a tourist attraction, an entity whose value exists beyond its mere ability to provide a means to your ends.  it's a sort of museum for the consumer's senses, a place you find yourself off-handedly suggesting as a date night destination, a place where you accidentally find yourself caressing superfluous tabletop knick knacks after a double margarita saturday lunch.  it's ikea, it's restoration hardware, it's williams-sonoma.  it's the kind of place where i drag steve through the door only to find him deeply engrossed with a hammered-copper-compass-slash-clock-slash-sundial-slash-desk-lamp five minutes later.

case-in-point: it's the sort of place where your wedding registry can get completely out of control if you let yourself go wild.

registering for wedding gifts is both a fun and an insufferable process.  when i was contacted by williams-sonoma to do a blog post about wedding registry do's and don'ts, i immediately remembered all the things i wish someone had told me when it came time to register for our wedding gifts.  now that we've had a chance to put some of our haul to use, i present to you the key advice i wish i'd had a few months ago.

WHAT TO DO

DO...register for china.  i've heard all the excuses for not doing this.  why?  because i made them.  when you're 24 years old living in a 700 SF apartment and you do the math on the cost of a 10 piece china set it seems reasonable to say "forget the china."  after steve and i spent our first thanksgiving stuffing ourselves in style, i can honestly say wedding china is worth it.  it's hard to imagine i won't look back on our first thanksgiving with our incredible turkey, half-cooked apple pie, and hike on padre island every time we bust out the china for fun formal events.  and there's just something truly lavish feeling about setting your tiny driftwood table with crystal and salad plates.  check out my pick from williams-sonoma's china collections here.

DO...consider the return process.  i had a fun time registering at crate and barrel, because when else could i freely admit to wanting a hamsa hand shaped serving tray without having to pay for such a thing?  what i didn't anticipate was ending up with lots and lots of frivolous accents and lacking any sort of king-sized bedding for our mattress.  alas, when we shipped our returns to crate and barrel we neither received a commensurate refund nor did their inventory supply us with any bedding to buy with our store credit.  if you do register for lots of "fun extras," be sure the store they come from also stocks items of functional value should you need to get practical retroactively.  fortunately, williams-sonoma has you covered in the bedding department.

WHAT NOT TO DO

DON'T...expect a standing mixer or a roomba.  somehow it seems like a standing mixer has become a wedding registry staple, but at $300+ these pricey items are probably outside the spending range of most people who give physical gifts.  if you consider items like a roomba must-haves, it's likely you'll be buying them yourself with the help of your gift cards.

DON'T...overdo it with an amazon registry, honeymoon registry, or "alternative options."  those of us who grew up with the internet are very used to finding the perfect specific item to fit our wants and needs.  however, the fact of the matter is that the etiquette of wedding gifts remains a bit more old-fashioned.  while some of your younger guests might get a kick out of getting you exactly what you want like an ipad or an extra excursion on your honeymoon, others would prefer their gifts play a more traditional role in your wedding day and marriage.  try to accommodate your guests' generosity with traditional options as well.

becky's holiday guide to better-than-santa-gift-giving

this is my grandmother (and my uncle) with a twilight poster.  probably one of the most hilarious christmas memories i have.
content recycling disclaimer:  this was a post i published on my other blog last year around christmas time.

Gift-giving is one of my favorite activities.  I am pretty sure I enjoy giving gifts slightly more than receiving them.  This may sound pious and altruistic of me, but be not deceived.  Gift giving is a competitive sport, and one that I have definitely started playing to win.  Few things are more awesome than giving someone the best gift they received that year.  It says to the world, “I am caring, insightful, personal, generous, and quite possibly omniscient.”  Santa?  Who the eff is Santa?  Your gift wasn’t constructed by the slave labor of midgets, it was hand selected by moi.
Clearly nothing can make me sound as self-possessed as I do discussing gift giving.  But in honor of the season I present to you a list of tips on how to up your skillz as a gifter.  Tis the season to get gifty, and all my Christmas shopping is done before black Friday.  Come now, you can’t say you have nothing to learn.
  1. No gift cards.  Christmas would not be complete without my brother’s annual rant on gift cards, and while I can’t say I relate to his theatrics, I will admit I agree with him.  Unless, of course, the gift card has been requested, or you have an EXTREMELY close relationship with the recipient, and KNOW they will welcome the shopping spree, well, a gift card isn’t the worst gift, but you’re never gonna make it to a final four gift bracket with a little snip of plastic.  At best a gift card is a weak substitute for cash, and at worst you have given someone an errand.  You have said, I didn’t know what to buy you, but I care more about how you spend my money by restricting where you can use it, than I do about giving you what you want.
  2. Join private sale websites.  Private sale sites like myhabit.com (owned by amazon) and hautelook.com (owned by Nordstrom) put high quality luxury gifts into a more reasonable price range.  Yes, I know, it’s the thought that counts.  But isn’t it terribly thoughtful of you to willingly endure regular spam email so that your friends and family can have awesome Christmas gifts?  Their sales cycle in and out too so if you don’t see anything Aunt Cindy would like you can always check back the next day and get a good deal on something excellent like this.
  3. Choose function over fashion.  Decorative accents or fashion accessories are dangerous territory.  There are only 2 people in the world for whom I would feel confident buying a gift with no function other than looks.  One is my boyfriend of three years (whose need for decorative objects is minimal), and the other is my sister, with whom I share an apartment.  You don’t need to start buying everyone drill bits, but making sure your gift actually DOES something will make up for any discrepancies in what is “cute.”  Odds are good your cousin isn’t going to tell you she thinks your taste is heinous.  Even if she does, she’ll probably still bust out an ugly set of luggage tags in a travel pinch more frequently than she will those hideous throw pillows you bought her.  If you MUST go decorative, stick to holiday themed objects (like tree ornaments, for example).  That way nobody will be scrambling to find those ugly earrings to wear upon your arrival, your gift will be temporarily displayed with all the other junk.
  4. Ask yourself if he’d rather buy it for himself.  This question can divert all kinds of gifting missteps.  It can help prevent personal preference problems like the ones I discussed above (for example, she’d probably rather buy her own fragrance than have stinky perfume for free).  Or, perhaps you, like me, are one of the less affluent gifters on your holiday guest list.  This can put a lot of gifts off limits to ensure what you buy isn’t going to serve as junky inspiration for a shopping trip.  Don’t buy a cheap bargain fleece throw that barely covers your recipient’s legs if you know they would prefer to drop the $40 it takes to buy one of these bad boys.  Certainly if they are of the mind that a blanket is a blanket by all means go with the bargain, but if you are worried you are skimping on quality they consider necessary, go a different direction.
  5. Tread lightly with DIY.  Some homemade gifts really cannot be beat.  Mrs. DC’s candied pecans, my grandma’s homemade caramels, something hand knitted, crocheted, or intricately sewn.  Others… well… hate to break it to you, pinterest, but nobody wants a mason jar full of sugar and olive oil labeled “body scrub.”  Homemade gifts are fine when the thought really is what counts.  Don’t forget that just because you made it, that doesn’t always make it thoughtful.  Be personal and think about what others genuinely would enjoy receiving, not what you would be easiest and cheapest to give.
happy december everyone!

saying no to the dress

well it is official.  i am completely finished wedding dress shopping!

last weekend my mom, my sister and i all went wedding dress shopping together (thanks for driving dad!) and i tried on more shades of white than i've ever seen in my life.  at macy's bridal salon in downtown chicago i got the full "say yes to the dress" treatment complete with amphitheater arranged "reveal" seating and more than one instance of hearing the phrase "wow factor."

ultimately, though, i found my dress at a funky little hole-in-the-wall store in a polish neighborhood far outside downton (seems fitting, i mean, i am going to be the future mrs. karpinski after all).  i'm still giddily looking at the pictures on my phone of the absolutely gorgeous gown i found to wear next fall.  it definitely makes the whole thing seem more real when you actually have an outfit to picture yourself in on your wedding day.  macy's had an absolutely stunning veil we decided to purchase, so i'm pretty much set apart from the shoes!  now i guess it's time to find steve the right shade of black for his suspenders!

obviously i can't reveal the dress i actually bought, but i there were a couple i tried on that i really thought might be "the ones." you'll have to wait until next year to know what my dress looks like, but these were the two runners up!  it was awfully hard to say no to these dresses, but i know the one i chose will be perfect!

happy thursday!

decor addict

we officially move in to our new place one week from today!!!
i'm happy to say we don't need to shell out big money to furnish it (been there done that last year thanks) but since we have a clean slate i'm getting completely psyched to add a few decorating details that will really make the apartment "us."

or at very least, a bit more unisex.  after hemming and hawing / weighing the pros and cons, we've decided to take the plunge and paint at least one room in the apartment.  chances are we will regret it when it comes time to move, but we're too excited to make the place our own to pass it up.  best case scenario it will be totally worth it, worst case scenario i'll throw a temper tantrum and we'll learn from experience that painting is a terrible idea.  since i already throw temper tantrums as often as i get hungry, we might as well risk it.

i am a very lucky lady to be receiving a gorgeous hand-me-down oriental rug from my grandmother (assuming it fits the dimensions of our living room).  we decided to go with yellow walls to match the marigold accents in the rug.  and isn't yellow the ultimate gender neutral cliche anyway?

maybe it was all the taxidermy we saw at the field museum last month, but i have my heart set on a cow skull to put over our new mantle.  so excited to get decorating!

happy hump day everybody!

bargain watching

so here's a fun fact about my family:  i have two older siblings, and all three of us were born on the 29th of the month (march, april and july).  this means my big sister's birthday is coming up at the end of this month, AND mother's day is right around the corner.  gift giving is literally one of my favorite things to do, and when the internet produced "the private sale website," shopping got put in a whole different ballpark.

if you are not a member of at least ONE of the following websites, swallow your pride and sign up (no, i am not sponsored or being paid to tell you this, it's just really solid life advice).  they are free to join.

they do spam your inbox a tiny bit (only with their own emails) but the deals you can get on these sites are absolutely incredible and they will totally change the way (and amount) you shop... forever.

if you don't believe me check out some of the things i have fallen in love with, while shopping for people's presents:

1.  14k gold thunderbird etched cuff $110:  $59 from gilt
2.  hangtime koi fish wall clock $149: $59 from myhabit
3.  tosca colorblock tote $60: $28 from hautelook
4.  lily pulitzer lottie dottie dress $198: $79 on ruelala
5.  14 piece bamboo utensil set $40: $22 on onekingslane
6.  tracy reese wylie wedge sandal $140: $70 on myhabit
8.  wiener dog oil and vinegar set: $40: $24 on fab

i'm opening a vintage store!

i am a bit of a hoarder at heart.  i have always loved collecting things ever since i was a little kid.  my brother used to religiously collect licence plates and i remember wanting to buy literally everything i could see at the flea markets we would stop at on the hunt for licence plates.  when it came time for me to furnish my first apartment, steve and i went antiquing and i just loved looking through all the junk and the treasures.

i have been getting such good feedback on the vintage finds i track down on etsy i recently made a decision.  i love decorating interiors and finding steals on incredible antiques.  remember when i said i had a little announcement yesterday?  well i have officially opened up a vintage shop on etsy!  merchandise will be added as i find great vintage pieces that i know would look great in someone's home.

to visit the shop visit this link or just click on the "shop" tab at the top of this page.  so what do you think?  this is a big project i'm really looking forward to, but i need your help!  what's your favorite item in the shop?  what kind of vintage items would you like to see me sell in the future?  below are some of the deals i have listed already.  stop by and let me know what you think!

1950's recipe tin $14

1920's wood cigar box $25

1970's milk glass vase $7

1970's stoneware sugar bowl and creamer $15
